Hey! Thanks for moving those double-parenthesis files, such as " File:Black Bowser's Castle (concept) (alt 3) - Paper Mario Color Splash.png". that's definitely a better way of naming them. RE: Press kits etc

Hello, and welcome to PidgiWiki! I'm glad you've found us. I know just the person who would love to talk with you about press kits: one of our members, Gaz. He's working on doing a bunch of press and web archival!

Unfortunately, my backup drive isn't accessible at the moment, so I can't check exactly what I've got out of the things you've got, but I know I have some things you don't have vice versa. Shoot me an email at immewnity[at]outlook.com and we can talk press stuff much more easily.

As far as what the site can do, it currently isn't set up to do videos, unfortunately. It's something I'd like to do in the future, but there are currently a few roadblocks to make it happen right now. Gameplay images (such as screenshots) are definitely acceptable! Just put "Screenshot" as the value for Purpose while uploading.

PSD files are accepted, too, but since they don't thumbnail, I try to keep images to single-layer files (though I think multi-layer TIFF files thumbnail). Feel free to upload the PSDs though, and when time permits, I'll get them converted over to PNG.

Thanks, and welcome again to PidgiWiki!--immewnity (talk) 14:59, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi! Yes, the FTP still exists - send me an email at the address above and I'll get you the login info.
As far as screenshot naming, just put "(screenshot)" after the name of the screenshot. I've edited the one you've uploaded already as an example. This is just to lessen possible naming conflicts between things.--immewnity (talk) 05:23, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
Oh hey, Immewnity, I didn't know we allow screenshot uploads here. Last time I asked DK screenshot requests, you said that idea was dropped because it got too confusing. Do you want to explain to me when screenshot uploads were allowed? Gaz (talk) 05:34, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Fields

Yes to characters in screenshots, yes to the events, and yes to date. There used to be a date variable, I just could never figure out a good format for it. I'll add it in a bit. For now, you can manually add it, and use any of the formats listed here.--immewnity (talk) 14:34, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

RE: A bunch of stuff

  • Official screenshots that are viewable in-game (or left unused in the game data): I suppose, yeah. This might change once I get staff input, but I haven't gotten a response back from anyone regarding screenshots themselves, so I dunno.
  • Sound files from press CDs/sites: Ultimately yes, I haven't worked out the security issues behind it yet, though - same as with video.
  • Also, does anybody on this site have money to throw away?: Oh man, that's a lot O_o Not getting enough from the Patreon to have the money for that yet :D --immewnity (talk) 05:10, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Date formatting in filenames

Since technically, the Nintendo Direct title is what you're referencing, not the date, so format it like "Nintendo Direct 6.21.2012". Date formatting for the date variable is as I said before.--immewnity (talk) 03:40, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Subevents

The first way is what I thought it could be used for, but it isn't set in stone (like almost anything else on this site). --immewnity (talk) 15:34, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Any idea how to rip this video?

This appears to be the URL embeded by GDC2011.nintendo.com when it was online. Do you have any idea how to extract the video file? The closest I got was here. I got there from following links in the source. But I can't find work out the full URL of the MP4s. --Hiccup (talk) 14:21, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Doesn't look like the video is available anymore :( --immewnity (talk) 15:40, 26 March 2016 (UTC)
Yeah... Alternatively, do you know if they ever released the powerpoint (or whatever) used in the presentation? It contained some early screenshots which would be nice to have in high quality. --Hiccup (talk) 16:07, 26 March 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately, they never release those. --immewnity (talk) 21:37, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Multiple things

  • RE: CD rips - Yes, for the two I own. I believe I've uploaded everything from those discs though.
  • RE: Raster images from vectors - Yes, I think Inkscape does it, but I don't remember if it is a direct 1:1 copy over, or if it depends on zoom level.
  • RE: Multiple sources - Put wherever the image came from. If a situation occurs where an image is in fact pieced together from multiple sources, then I'll add it, but for now, it's pointless. The image came from one source in 99.99% of situations (that's totally a made-up statistic, but considering we haven't come across that yet, it's probably pretty accurate).--immewnity (talk) 16:11, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, if there's something you think I might have, go ahead and ask! --immewnity (talk) 16:23, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Hmm... I've definitely got stuff from all those games on the FTP. Sonic Rush doesn't have a whole lot, mostly because there was never a backup that I've found from Sega's old FTP, but there are a few things in Banners and Videos for the series. As far as the others, there are so many all over the place (see here for an example - the FTP is "D:/PidgiNet things to staff/"). I wish I could give you a good spot to look, but there's so much since those are Nintendo series. The FTP isn't organized at all, it was never meant to actually be an FTP, only originally just my personal backup server, so it's a pain in the you-know-where to search through.--immewnity (talk) 07:21, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Icons

None of the icons you commented on were ripped from the game, IIRC. Regardless, depending on what it is, it could still be useful. There are a number of images ripped from games that are on here, and are useful. I'll check the CDs when I can.--immewnity (talk) 07:03, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. What if the in-game version is bigger/has less artifacts - should it be uploaded to replace the non-in-game image? --Hiccup (talk) 09:26, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
If it's the same image, yes!--immewnity (talk) 16:44, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the Links On Your Userpage

Hiccup, thank you for the links on the front page (and for helping upload stuff here). I really appreciate it, and I'm sure Immewnity really appreciates it too. The links help me find stuff to add to my archives (and to archive itself, if a website.)

I feel like I ran out of stuff to upload, but maybe Banjo-Kazooie sounds like something I could upload renders. I was playing it just the other day. Gaz (talk) 16:44, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Yes, for AssemblerGames (and have even archived that thread myself). I haven't uploaded the Nintendo Press Kits to the Internet Archive because I think that would be breaking the Terms of Use.
I assume I have all of the Nintendo press kits. Which ones would you have that I do not have? Gaz (talk) 00:49, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
I did not reupload them because of legal concerns (except in a WARC file). Additionally, where did you get all of that beta NSMB stuff, like the Beta.wmv? I think I'll check that out, thanks. Gaz (talk) 01:12, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
I didn't reupload any of the press kits to Internet Archive except through a WARC archive of my AssemblerGames thread.
Wait, actually, how did you find that E3 2009 press kit? May I have a look at that instead? Gaz (talk) 20:38, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll still have a look, thanks. Anything on E3 2010/2011? Gaz (talk) 17:16, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Videos

I've enabled a rudimentary video system, time to see if it actually works.--immewnity (talk) 16:37, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Unfortunately not :( Too many security issues at the moment to allow them.--immewnity (talk) 17:22, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
No clue.--immewnity (talk) 06:48, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Re: Main art

There's not really any standardization. Some companies (especially Sega) refer to certain pieces of art as key art, but in general, I'd say key art is the main promotional artwork used, often (but not always) the box art. Basically, just make sure the name matches the image - if the artwork isn't the main artwork used, don't use key art. Promotional is used for any sort of promotional artwork, group is used if there are multiple characters, character is used for a single character. For the latter two, try having the character name(s) if it/they aren't too lengthy, especially for single character.--immewnity (talk) 05:22, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

Re: More content questions

Yes to the screenshots and videos, no to the full scans. While I'd love to be able to do full scans for the purpose of archival, it is a legal no-no.--immewnity (talk) 15:37, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Though, when you said official/unofficials scans of manuals, this doesn't include things that are freely available anyways. For example, this would be okay.--immewnity (talk) 15:40, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Yes, even defunct magazines. Most still have a copyright holder - Nintendo Power, for example, still falls under Future US.--immewnity (talk) 20:19, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Re: Three questions

  • 1. Nintendo DSi, since the system it is designed for is the Nintendo DSi. Games like Pokémon Rumble World added confusion here, so this is a way to keep things simple.
  • 2. It's complicated - viruses can be embedded in some, and the MediaWiki plugins don't look for that.
  • 3. I'll work on figuring out how to get a directory listing, but remember, the FTP gets new stuff a lot, so the listing won't stay accurate for long.--immewnity (talk) 22:28, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
    • Subsystem is a possibility - lemme think about that one.
    • You're not who I'm worried about, it's other people I'm worried about. Unfortunately, even just allowing it can open up vulnerabilities.
    • I'm exporting a listing now - I suppose I could figure out how to do a changelog, but for the time being, I just hope it can create a directory listing without crashing :P --immewnity (talk) 15:15, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
Okay, here's the directory listing - be warned, it's a very big file (~221MB)!--immewnity (talk) 15:47, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately not, re: video uploading. :( --immewnity (talk) 14:49, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
That would involve learning how to code a MediaWiki bot! And part of it isn't even just other people downloading them - it's possible for these to, once they're uploaded, do damage to the server right away. --immewnity (talk) 16:16, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
I don't believe so - most of the problem is on the MediaWiki side, which is the software PidgiWiki runs on, and I'd want the videos to be playable on the site if they are on here.--immewnity (talk) 15:11, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Extracting JPGs from PDFs

Hey! I hope you don't mind, I was creeping on your user page and noticed you had a part that linked to a PDF to JPG converter. If you're trying to get images out of PDFs, sometimes the images are scaled, so I use Nitro PDF to extract the full images - it still is able to do extractions after the free trial is over, too. It's especially useful for some of the game info PDFs from Nintendo UK (you'll have to check the FTP for them, though, since NoUK took them down a couple years ago). --immewnity (talk) 06:57, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Re: Nitro PDF

The program installs registry entries, so the installed directory wouldn't do you any good. What was the issue with the installer? --immewnity (talk) 05:01, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there's really no (legal) way to get the program to work without installing it. --immewnity (talk) 05:02, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
The program wouldn't work if I were to do that - you'd get an error about it not finding the registry entries.--immewnity (talk) 15:38, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

Re: Files pertaining to multiple games

In general, if it's for multiple games, there's probably some other way to categorize it - for example, if it's a mashup of game box images, then you'd use whatever occasion they were put together for. If the media has been used for multiple games, like Pokémon character art, you'd use the first game the media was used for.--immewnity (talk) 04:26, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

I moved it - see what I did with the filename. Basically, as long as it's descriptive, it's fine - the description is what needs to be rich to be found via the search function.--immewnity (talk) 05:14, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Original filename

Hi! Thanks for all you've uploaded. I noticed you oftentimes put the image's original filename. While this is in no way a required thing, of course, it would be awesome if you could put it in the "description" field. While it doesn't really matter from a usability standpoint, just where it shows up, it might be better there in case something changes with the Info template.--immewnity (talk) 02:38, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

FTP transfer

Hey, I had to stop your transfer from my end, as it was just too many files to transfer at once (when I stopped it, you were maybe 1/10th of the way through).--immewnity (talk) 10:55, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Re: Different platforms

That's a very good question. If the game is meant to give the same experience across all platforms, then put it before the hyphen. If the game is noticeably different across platforms, then put it after the hyphen. --immewnity (talk) 13:49, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

SM64

No worries! --immewnity (talk) 17:32, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

RE: EPS

Theoretically, yes, but it would be the same as where PSD files are at. Speaking of which, I'm debating removing PSD files as an upload option. PidgiWiki files are meant for general public use, at least as the site is geared currently. This mostly means files ready-to-go for web use. PSDs are not, as is evidenced from the inability to get thumbnails for them. While I'd love to include these original files, it's simply not the scope of PidgiWiki for both practical and legal reasons. The only reason I have PSDs as an uploadable type is because they're not always the easiest to convert if one doesn't have Photoshop, whereas EPS files are relatively easy to convert with Ghostscript and similar programs. I'm going to convert the two PSDs you uploaded today in a few minutes, and I'm currently working on converting all the EPS files on the FTP server (though on the server, not deleting the original EPS files).--immewnity (talk) 04:50, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

Do you have FTP access? I can't remember. If so, I've got a really nice script for converting EPS files. --immewnity (talk) 14:19, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
I think it's in a folder called Batch scripts, then Converting. It's like eps2pdf2svg_or_eps2png.bat or something like that - make sure the programs called inside the script are installed, and that the paths are the same (else, modify your local copy of the script to match your path).--immewnity (talk) 14:29, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

RE: AVI

Sorry, I've tried enabling it, but some setting doesn't work right and it doesn't allow the site to load.--immewnity (talk) 21:25, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Not even something I can do, at least in a way that it is viewable on the site (else you'd have to download to see the whole thing). Convert to another format?
BTW, just so you're aware, we're having a staff discussion about screenshots and such on the site - the previous decision was made just by me, so we want to come to a staff consensus on if they fall under the scope of PidgiWiki. It might be better off suited to another site (or a possible second site that we could start); I'll let you know what the consensus is.--immewnity (talk) 16:31, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

RE: Beta logos

The first naming scheme (File:Logo (E3 2005) NA - Mario & Luigi Partners in Time.png) is preferred. Beta is used if the origin is unknown.--immewnity (talk) 04:22, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

RE: Big video file

That's waaayyyy too large to be able to go on the site. MediaWiki would crash thumbnailing it. Plus, that'd take up about 10% of the remaining server space - part of why it appears the general consensus among staff so far is to put videos elsewhere (nothing final yet, though). Videos are just really, really large. Regarding description, yes, be as descriptive as you can be.--immewnity (talk) 18:52, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Console categories

Can you explain to me what you were doing? I can probably make the change in the Infobox, because I don't want separate defined categories.--immewnity (talk) 17:42, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Made the change. Should auto-categorize now when no game is defined.--immewnity (talk) 18:39, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
No worries! I don't think it'll need to be removed at all. Woo! --immewnity (talk) 18:43, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
I figured you'd bring that up :P I'm trying to figure out how to work that. I guess for now, we can do it manually. Gotta still figure out a way to implement that into the infobox.--immewnity (talk) 18:49, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

RE: Removing press sites for sources

Yes, if you come across them, please do - "Nintendo of [Country]" would be best. We'll be able to sort out the tiny differences (Nintendo of France vs Nintendo France) later on with ease. Thanks for all you do on this site!--immewnity (talk) 19:01, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for setting up the site. :) --Hiccup (talk) 19:07, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

RE: .doc

Theoretically, I can do .docx, but not .doc for security reasons. Any reason why they couldn't be saved as a PDF? --immewnity (talk) 15:03, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Part of it is that the files are embedded, so it's all up to the client browser and the server, too. Some files we can't upload because MediaWiki blocks them entirely, other ones are my discretion. Mostly, though, it's MediaWiki blocking them.--immewnity (talk) 13:49, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
Could you add MP3? It seems to be one of MediaWiki's allowed formats, and converting it to OGG cannot be done losslessly, apparently. --Hiccup (talk) 15:05, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

File:Logo EN - Paper Mario Color Splash.png

What do you mean by "it is merged with the background"? --immewnity (talk) 03:50, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

That's how it actually is - the Paper Mario logos tend to have a white-ish border around them.--immewnity (talk) 16:40, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
Hmm, okay. I can see what you mean, if I look at it without zooming in. BTW, where did you get the PSD from? --Hiccup (talk) 17:23, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
Bump on this question. Can't find any on Europe or USA press sites. --Hiccup (talk) 10:08, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't get a chance to check the site until now, and the first one got buried in Recent changes. I believe it was from Nintendo France, may have been Spain. On mobile and can't check right now. --immewnity (talk) 14:15, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Ah, that one. I think I dismissed that source, but now I realise it is updated occasionally. Thanks. --Hiccup (talk) 15:01, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

RE: Useful tool

Gotta make sure the files are otherwise identical. Else, yeah, it's a very easy thing to do, even in Photoshop or Paint.NET (with Alpha Mask extension). I've done it before with File:Wheel - Kirby Air Ride.jpg and File:Wheel (alt) - Kirby Air Ride.jpg. I'd want to make sure there's a way to mark it's a modified render, if it should even fit on the site at all.--immewnity (talk) 20:31, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

E-mail

Check your email - very important content in there. --immewnity (talk) 06:56, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Re: Niggles

First off, props for using the word "niggles" - I can't say I've heard the word before! Learning new things every day.

With the date, I know - it's luckily an issue with the infobox, so once I fix it in the backend, all the categorization will be correct. Basically, if there's no day or month specified, it uses the current day and month. I'm working on a way to detect this and change it accordingly.

For watch, I didn't realize that I kept that out. I removed it while developing the skin because it used an antiquated icon, but I meant to fix the icon soon after. I'll look into the code and figure out how to re-enable it. In the meantime, you can add ?action=watch to a URL to add it.--immewnity (talk) 23:44, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

RE: Cropping logos

Feel free not to, but it does take up space unless it's a compressed PNG. For the most part, yes, they are "boundaries", but there's not a good standard. For the order of things, probably the former - looks better in my opinion.--immewnity (talk) 20:37, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Moving titles

Hey! Thanks for moving those double-parenthesis files, such as " File:Black Bowser's Castle (concept) (alt 3) - Paper Mario Color Splash.png". that's definitely a better way of naming them. YoshiKong (talk · edits) 16:14, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

RE: Subcharacters

Do the latter for now - if we want to do the former, we can script it for the few instances for which this situation happens.--immewnity (talk) 13:34, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
