In general, PidgiWiki follows The Videogame Style Guide and Reference Manual, a collaborative effort between the former International Game Journalists Association and Games Press. The guide is a bit outdated, so there are a number of pieces that may differ in PidgiWiki's use. Any differences or addenda are listed below as they are realized.
+
Additions and changes will be made to the following as needed.
System Names
+
Nintendo
*Atari 2600: While the manual states the system is referred to as the Atari Video Computer System (and lists subsequent abbreviations),  this is no longer a common name for the system. Only refer to the system as the Atari 2600.
+
Mario
*Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Super Nintendo (SNES/Super NES): The abbreviation of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is also acceptable as the Super NES. Super Nintendo is the preferred abbreviation.
+
* Nintendo's flagship franchise is the Mario series, starring the character Mario.
*Wii: The manual says to put Nintendo in front of the system name, and references part of the E3 2006 style guide. However, to again reference the E3 2006 style guide, "It is simply Wii, not Nintendo Wii." With respect to this, the system should only be referred to as the Wii.
+
** The main games in this series (most Mario 2D or 3D platformer titles) are referred to in a subseries, the Super Mario series. Games that are not included in the Super Mario subseries include the Mario Kart series, the Paper Mario series, the Mario Party series, the Dr. Mario series, and the Mario Tennis series, among many others.
**This goes for the Wii mini and Wii U as well.
+
** Recurring characters in this franchise include Mario, Princess Peach, Luigi, Toad, Wario, Yoshi, Princess Daisy, Waluigi, and Boo.
*Nintendo DS: While the Nintendo DS and its successors are often referred to without the Nintendo, the console title does include the company name.
+
The Legend of Zelda
** This goes for the Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo DSi XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 3DS, and New Nintendo 3DS XL as well.
+
* The franchise featuring the character Link is The Legend of Zelda series.
*Nintendo Switch: Similar to the Nintendo DS, the full name of the console is "Nintendo Switch", although the Nintendo Switch is often referred to without the "Nintendo".

 +
Donkey Kong
 +
* The franchise featuring the character Donkey Kong is simply known as the Donkey Kong series.

Here at PidgiWiki, we want all files uploaded to be easily accessible to anyone who wants to access them. This accessibility means that we must categorize and name all files with the same patterns. This page will aid in naming any files uploaded.

As you may have noticed, PidgiWiki is currently targeted to English-speaking audiences. While no other languages have been announced, the MediaWiki software has a built-in language switcher accessible via the preferences page. However, the default language is currently English, meaning that files must be named in English.

General rules

There are a number of rules that must be put in place for general usage.

Naming basics

In general, use Subject name - Media name.ext as a template for file names, e.g. Xerneas - Pokemon X and Y.jpg or Pikachu - Pokemon Battle Revolution.png. If the piece of art is not tied to a piece of media, omit the second part of the file name, including the hyphen.

Exceptions

Accents and non-alphanumeric characters

DO NOT use accents or non-alphanumeric (e.g. é, è,:,; etc.) in page titles. This causes issues when trying to move files.

Files in another language/region

For images with language texts, put the two-letter language code at the end of the subject name, e.g. Logo JP - Pokemon Y.jpg or Logo EN - Pokemon Y.png for the Japanese and English logos of Pokémon Y, respectively. The language codes to be used are ISO 639-1 codes, listed here; if possible, however, use the region code listed here.

Box and package images

For box and package images, put the two-letter region code at the end of the subject name, e.g. Box UK - Paper Mario Sticker Star.jpg or Box NA - Paper Mario Sticker Star.png for the box images of Paper Mario Sticker Star in the United Kingdom and in North America, respectively.

Alternate artwork

If there are two versions of a piece of artwork, add "(alt)" to the end of the subject name, e.g. Monty Mole (alt) - New Super Mario Bros U.png. If there are multiple alternate versions, add "(alt #)" to the end. Instead of using "(alt 1)", however, just use "(alt)". Use a similar naming for artwork with specific alternate versions, such as Ditto (beta) - Pokemon Red and Green.jpg.

Forms/Formes

As evidenced by the spelling in the title, the naming of forms or formes have been debated, with criteria for each name still under scrutiny. To avoid any of this fighting here, PidgiWiki will avoid using "form" of "forme" at all, so put the form/forme name in parentheses directly after the Pokémon name, e.g. Tornadus (Therian) - Black 2 and White 2.png.

Naming conventions

Additions and changes will be made to the following as needed.

Nintendo

Mario

The Legend of Zelda

Donkey Kong

Kirby

Pokémon

SEGA

 • The company is called SEGA, not Sega.

= Sonic the Hedgehog
